MLB Power Rankings: Week 16
12. Seattle Mariners (49-43)
The Mariners are holding on by a thread right now. The offense is bad, like very, very, very bad. Like, ranks last in the league bad. For a team that’s in first place in the division, having that bad of hitting is almost unheard of. They are only 2 games ahead of the Astros in the AL West and right now it just seems like a matter of time before they lose their lead.
11. San Diego Padres (49-45)
The Padres maintain their consistent presence in the NL wild card standings. They are sending five players to the All Star game, 3rd most in the National League behind the Dodgers and Phillies.
10. Kansas City Royals (49-43)
The Royals have lost two series in a row to the Rays and Rockies. Not what you want to see after a big series win against the Guardians a couple weeks ago. The recent skid has pushed them out of a postseason spot, now trailing the Red Sox in the wild card standings by 1.5 games entering the week.
9. Boston Red Sox (49-40)
Boston has won 6 of their last 7 games, including a big series win in the Bronx against the Yankees last weekend. They have claimed a postseason spot as the third wild card team in the AL. This team is fun to watch and has earned every bit of success. It should be a fun race to watch in the second half.
8. Minnesota Twins (52-39)
The inconsistency that plagued this team early on this season has seemed to improve in the right direction lately. They have won 11 of their last 15 games and have separated themselves for a solid lead in the AL wild card race.
7. Atlanta Braves (50-39)
The Braves offense has started to show signs of coming back to life a bit. If their bats start to finally get hot, this is a team to fear. The pitching has been great all season even without their ace and other front end arms underachieving.
6. Milwaukee Brewers (53-38)
The scrappy Brew Crew continue their reign atop the NL Central with a 4.5 game lead entering the week. This will be an interesting team to watch at the trade deadline, considering they were heading toward a rebuild, it’s unclear if they will be buyers or sellers.
5. New York Yankees (55-37)
The Yankees are in the middle of a 4-13 stretch over the last few weeks. They have fallen 3 games behind the Orioles for first place in the AL East. They have an opportunity to make up some ground this weekend when they travel to Baltimore for a 3-game set.
4. Cleveland Guardians (56-33)
Boring but good.
3. Los Angeles Dodgers (55-36)
After dropping back-to-back series against division foes in the Giants and Diamondbacks, the Dodgers got a nice series win against the Brewers over the weekend. LA will have a big test this week when they travel to Philadelphia for a 3-game series.
2. Baltimore Orioles (57-33)
Orioles have been cursing and own the biggest lead in the AL East this season over the Yankees. They have a chance to head into the All Star break feeling really good if they get the series win over New York.
1. Philadelphia Phillies (58-32)
Although they lost a series against the Braves over the weekend, the Phillies still have a 7.5 game lead over Atlanta in the NL East entering the week. They have a premier matchup this week against the Dodgers that will feature 13 combined All Stars between the two clubs.
