MLB Power Rankings: Week 7
12 - Los Angeles Angels (21-20)
The Halos have been struggling a bit lately. They have lost 3 straight series after winning the opening game. Anthony Rendon is hurt again, but what’s new? Bottom line is that the Angels are still in the hunt but they need to find a way to close out series wins.
11 - Houston Astros (21-19)
A roller coaster of a season continues for the defending champs. They haven’t quite found that winning formula yet but there’s no reason to count them out at this point. The pitching has been great, as it normally is. The batting has been very inconsistent but Jose Altuve’s return is on the horizon.
10 - Arizona Diamondbacks (23-18)
Arizona has solidified themselves in second place in the NL West. They have benefited from an easier schedule lately and they draw the A’s this week. The lineup continues to be one of the best in baseball and if they continue that production they should be in a wild card hunt.
9 - Minnesota Twins (23-18)
The Twins bats finally went off for 33 runs in last weekend’s series win against the Cubs. Obviously they aren’t going to score at that rate every game but if they can be more consistent scoring runs, they are going to win a lot of games as the pitching continues to be one of the best in the league.
8 - New York Yankees (23-19)
The Yankees got a hard fought series split aginant the Rays last weekend. They have lifted themselves out of the deep AL East cellar. New York has another big division matchup against the Blue Jays this week.
7 - Milwaukee Brewers (23-17)
The Brewers have reclaimed the NL Central lead and Christian Yelich has shown glimpses of his formal MVP-self lately. This feels like a team that should be winning more games than they are but a lot of that is because of an injured pitching staff. They’re not an elite team but a team that if hot at the right time can be scary.
6 - Toronto Blue Jays (24-16)
The Blue Jays completed a very impressive sweep of the Braves last weekend. I’m still waiting for this team to really go off and maybe the moment from the sweep will be the beginning of that. They have a big opportunity to bury the Yankees this week with a four game series.
5 - Texas Rangers (25-15)
The Rangers continue to keep their lead in the AL West behind what may be the best lineup in baseball and a pitching staff that is overachieving behind a phenomenal Nathan Eovaldi. Week by week they are entering the conversation of a true postseason contender.
4 - Baltimore Orioles (26-14)
The Orioles continue their impressive start to the season with two series wins against the Pirates and Rays last week. They look like a true team that has great chemistry and that’s really the main reason they have been winning so many games. They have a ton of confidence right now and that is driving this team to great things.
3 - Los Angeles Dodgers (26-15)
The month of May has been good for the Dodgers having won 13 of their last 15 games. They are coming off a sweep of their foes to the south in the Padres. They’re playing their brand of baseball lately, great starting pitching with timely hitting and a bullpen that’s deep and consistent.
2 - Atlanta Braves (25-15)
The Braves got swept by a good Blue Jays team last weekend. That should be a rare occurrence this season. Atlanta is still an elite club and will have a chance to take on another first place team in the Rangers this week.
1 - Tampa Bay Rays (31-11)
The Rays looked more beatable last week with a series loss to the Orioles and a series split to the Yankees. That was expected considering how incredible of a start they got off to. That behind said, no other club in baseball is close to the level this Rays team has played.
