MLB Power Rankings: Week 6
12 - Toronto Blue Jays (18-17)
(PR: 9)
The Blue Jays find themselves in a bit of a skid, having lost 6 of their last 7 games. They seem like a team with so much talent but haven’t quite found that winning formula yet. Maybe the expectations were too high for them and they are putting too much pressure on themselves. Either way, they need to figure something out or this season could go in a very bad direction.
11 - Minnesota Twins (20-15)
(PR: 11)
I’m still not sure what to think of this Twins team. They feel like a squad that can be good and they have so far in 2022 but they can also be a team that gets outscored 21-3 in a series (which they did last week against Houston). They find themselves on top of the AL Central for now but my gut tells me it’s only a matter of time before they start to fall.
10 - Tampa Bay Rays (21-14)
(PR: 10)
My favorite thing about this Rays team is their competitiveness. A perfect example is after getting no-hit by the Angels last Tuesday night, they came back and won 4-2 the next day in Anaheim. They win because of the culture in Tampa and the players that buy in. Don’t count them out.
9 - St. Louis Cardinals (19-15)
(PR: 12)
The pitching staff for the Cardinals lacks depth and right now it’s what is keeping them from going on a big run. Their big bats, Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt have been great. They find themselves only 2.5 games back of the first place Brewers.
8 - San Francisco Giants (20-14)
(PR: 8)
After a nice 6-game win streak, the Giants lost the last two games of the week to the Cardinals including a 15-6 loss on Sunday Night Baseball. The starting pitching has gone through a bit of a rough patch and the big production they got from their veterans last year is dwindling. They are a very well coached team though and should remain in the hunt for the division title.
7 - San Diego Padres (22-13)
(PR: 5)
The Padres continue to hang steady in the very competitive NL West thanks to their starting pitching. The offense past Manny Machado and Eric Hosmer is pretty awful and the bullpen continues to have its issues. The return of Fernando Tatis is on the horizon.
6 - Los Angeles Angels (24-13)
(PR: 6)
I was going to rank the Halos higher but for me, they’re a team that needs to prove it more than others. They have all the pieces in place to make a run but can they stay healthy and can the pitching continue to keep the pace of their great production? I like what I see early on and it could be a fun summer in Anaheim.
5 - Milwaukee Brewers (22-13)
(PR: 4)
Other than Corbin Burnes and Eric Lauer, the Brewers starting pitching hasn't been all that great to begin the year. I believe Brandon Woodruff will find his stuff again and the back end of the bullpen is scary great. The offense has actually been the strong point for the Brewers, they rank 4th in runs scored and slugging percentage.
4 - Houston Astros (23-12)
(PR: 7)
The Astros have won 12 of their last 13 games and have made the biggest leap in this power rankings. It has been the pitching that has gotten them here, especially from their starters (they rank 2nd in MLB in quality starts). Justin Verlander has been immaculate to begin the season going 5-1 with a 1.38 ERA and his 0.68 WHIP is the best in baseball.
3 - New York Mets (23-13)
(PR: 2)
The Mets ran into some injury trouble last week - catcher James McCann fractured his wrist and starting pitcher Tylor Megill went on the IL with biceps tendonitis. The Mets will have their depth tested early in the season, which so far, hasn’t been an issue. They continue to get production from multiple players and it will serve them well as they get healthier.
2 - Los Angeles Dodgers (21-12)
(PR: 1)
A walk-off win Sunday against the Phillies saved the Dodgers from being swept in a four game series at home following losing 2 of 3 to the Pirates on the road. Clayton Kershaw was put on the IL for a back injury but thankfully isn’t expected to miss too much time. They aren’t playing great right now but they still have the best pitching staff in baseball and the offense is showing signs of coming together for a dominant run.
1 - New York Yankees (25-9)
(PR: 3)
In what was expected to be a very competitive AL East, the Yankees are separating themselves not only in that division but in all of baseball. They are playing every phase of the game very well right now. Aaron Judge is at MVP level and the starting pitching is as deep as ever, especially with the breakthrough performance of Nestor Cortez (1.35 ERA through 7 starts).
